What Does 'Updating' Mean?
Every software program is a work in progress. Improvements are made. 'Bugs' are fixed. Special situations are addressed. 'Updating' means installing the latest version of the software to obtain the most recent improvements.
'Updating' is different from 'upgrading'. The latter means to purchase a higher edition of BCSS (Deluxe, Diamond or Virtual) to obtain the added features of the advanced edition. 'Upgrading' can also mean purchasing the same edition of the software but with substantial improvements, like the recent upgrade of BCSS from Visual Basic to FoxPro 9.0.
Updating BCSS is free, and doing so regularly will keep BCSS fresh on your computer with the latest improvements. Perhaps as often as once per quarter, check the latest updates at http://www.bestconsignmentshopsoftware.com/updates.htm.
Unlike other software programs, updates are not withheld for any reason. Some vendors charge annual services fees and withhold updates (and service) if fees aren't paid. (Liberty, Consignpro, CCE, The Consignment Shop)
Updating BCSS
As of 4/1/2010, updates in BCSS are automated. Just select 'Check for Update' under Help. If an update is available it will be downloaded and installed while you wait. If a database modification is necessary a message will appear asking you to contact support.
This is the message that appears when 'Check for Update' is selected: "If an update is available, it will be necessary to reboot your computer. If it is ok to reboot now, close this window, click on Help then click on "Check for Update' again. BCSS will close. Your computer will reboot. It might be necessary to modify your data. If so, notice and instructions will appear. When you restart BCSS, the new update will have been applied, if it is ready. If you were experiencing a difficulty prior to the update, check to see that the problem has been resolved. If it has not been resolved, click on Help and select 'Send Email to Help Desk'. Send an email to us. Include your name, shop name, the error message(s) (if any) and the actions that produce the error. Please be specific."
As of 4/1/2010, the BCSS application file (bcss.exe) located in the BCSS Program Folder (by default: C:\Programs) can be replaced by pressing 'Download Update Again' under Help in BCSS. The computer will reboot with the latest BCSS version installed. This feature can be used to essentially replace/refresh the BCSS program without disturbing your data.
